Pre-Authorization

A requirement from your insurance company that you or your doctor must obtain approval before receiving certain medical services, procedures, or medications. This is also sometimes called prior authorization.

Detailed Explanation

Failing to get pre-authorization for a required service may result in your insurance company denying coverage for that service.

Practical Example

Before scheduling her MRI, Sarah's doctor's office contacted her insurance company to obtain pre-authorization. This ensured that the procedure would be covered by her plan.
